{FAMILY} Why I’ve Decided To Stop Making My Son Wear Pants

In the middle of my son’s Kindergarten year, he decided that he didn’t like pants. He didn’t just dislike them as an item of clothing – he refused to wear them.

For months I fought the daily battle, trying my best to wrangle him into pants. Some days, physically forcing him into the ankle-length garb.

And then one day, I gave up.

I waved my white flag and walked away unscathed (except for maybe a slightly-bruised ego).

I soon realized that my desire for him to wear pants wasn’t just about “dressing for the weather”, it came from my fear of being judged by other parents. I worried that they would look at his bare shins as he strolled through the rain in shorts, and determine that I was an unfit mother.

How could I let my son walk out of the house improperly dressed?

But I was fighting a battle that didn’t need to be fought. Sure, his legs would get cold during the cooler months, but he would learn his lesson through natural consequences, not through my incessant nagging. And why did I care so much about the opinions of others? Isn’t our goal as parents to teach our children to think for themselves and not follow the pack when it comes to the opinions of peers?

He’s an active kid – always moving, and always hot. If he feels comfortable wearing shorts all year round – so be it.

Thankfully, Peekaboo Beans offers a great variety of just-below-the-knee thick cotton bottoms, so stubborn shorts lovers can sport their favourite half-pant all year round – without freezing their buns off.

Parenting experts say to “pick your battles” when it comes to confrontations with kids, and this one just isn’t worth the fight.

Do your kids insist on wearing shorts year-round? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

{FAMILY} This Is How We Do Spring In Vancouver

May Quote

For me, May is the month of milestones. It’s the month I gave birth to both my first born, and my littlest bee. It’s the month we celebrate the birth of my mother, and the gift of motherhood. It signifies the start of my writing career, and the anniversary of our move to BC’s North Shore where we now call home.

May is not just about the flowers that bloom after April’s showers, it also marks the beginning of a slew of sunny days in Vancouver – and we plan to take full advantage.

River dipping and berry picking in Peekaboo Beans – perfect for a day of outdoor play

This weekend, we did just that. We toddled along the tippy rocks that decorate the river’s edge. We dipped our toes in the icy cold water, and watched as river bugs and tiny fish splashed past our feet. We picked salmon berries from the bushes that line the river’s long and winding corridor, and we turned our faces to the sun and soaked up its warming rays.

After a quick lunch at home, we headed back outside for some old-school fun on our new trampoline. The weather was so warm that we decided to set the kids up with a fun cool-off-in-the-sun activity that we used to do in our childhood days – we set up the sprinkler under the trampoline, put the kids in their bathing suits, and hours of fun ensued.

As the day cooled off, we wound down with a little quiet time before heading in for dinner. My hubs and I sat back and sipped on ice cold beers while we watched our little ones bond – enjoying every moment of Spring in Vancouver.

We had a full day outdoors – and it didn’t cost a thing.

I can’t wait to see what else May has in store for us. With this beautiful weather and so many more milestones on the horizon, May truly does make it seem as though all things are possible.

{FAMILY} Spring Came Early Thanks To Peekaboo Beans

My family and I recently enjoyed a last-minute getaway to our favourite local destination – Harrison Hot Springs, and on the day before our departure, a colourful little package arrived from our favourite children’s fashion line – Peekaboo Beans.

While we were away, I thought I would snap some photos of my little beans enjoying their stylish new outfits while doing what they love most, exploring the outdoors. And just our luck, amidst a week’s worth of rainy days, the sun came out just for us. Here are some of my top snaps from our little midweek jaunt.

We love it here so much, we’ll be back again during Spring Break! And I’m sure my kids will still be rocking their bright, funky Peekaboo Beans outfits then too.
